The Exclusive Interview with Daisong Guan, Director of Shanda Games Art R&D Center
Q: Mr. Guan, please introduce Shanda’s original intension of holding this contest. Regarding this contest, how does Shanda position it?
A: Thanks. I hope you can call me Daisong or Guan instead of Mr.Guan.
To Shanda Games, this contest is international theme image works collection in a wide range for the first time. Based on the spirit of opening-up, freedom and creativity, we collect excellent artists’ creative works globally to design uniform international series cartoon characters for Shanda Games‘ all subordinated flash, web, leisure video game products. The winner characters will be used in the series products brought out by Shanda in the future, including the logo images mainly promoted by the subordinated leisure community and video games. On one hand this contest represents Shanda’s attitude of advocating creativity enthusiasm and vigor. On the other hand, it is hoped that more customers can experience the power of creativity.
Q: What do you think of the collection of the entries in this contest? And which submission is the most impressive one.
A: Lots of submissions have impressed me deeply. Every day when I fill in the judging form, it is hard to me. Because compared with the excellent works, our awards are really limited. There are many works which I am reluctant to discard. That's the main reason that I delay the submission of the judging forms.
There are lots of works I like very much personally, e.g. Siyan and His Friends, Kuafu and His Fellow Soldiers. They have shown Chinese features nicely, combining some philosophy of eastern countries with the unique and modern appearance. But because of applicability and cognition, I have to give up this group of works finally. It is a difficult process. I hope to communicate with the creators of this group of works if possible.
Moreover there are still a lot of works which can catch your eyes with great creativity and strong visual impact. But because of lacking of childlike feelings, it makes some distance to the audience. I am a little sorry for the loss of these works in the contest.
I am pleased that from these works I see our potential as we start to have creativity and unique views. We are still a little shy of the maturity, but not far away from the real internationalization. These are the hope and foundation with which we can face the future.
Q: As a leader in domestic industry, Shanda could have profound understanding about the video game industry. Please tell about what qualities they should have if the contestants want to get into this industry.
A: Thanks. I would explain as much as I can understand.
When we discuss the demand of talents, the demand and change of this industry in the future is the first thing we should take into consideration. In the last several years, China’s video game industry is still in its beginning stage. Whatever the video game is, such as large scale one, leisure one or flash game, how to make a game well can always be paid more attention to. So in this time, the talents with excellent producing ability are the main demand.
But in the following time, industry and procedure will be divided delicately. The industrial form with clearer division of labor and more optimized creative ability turns up. In this stage, the difference of producing ability is reduced. The competition of homogenization becomes severer. The demand for creativity and its value led by differentiation and requirement of innovation is protruding. Moreover it has become the bottleneck for China’s video game art development.
As the same as the production procedures of Hollywood, this mode of good idea plus good production makes the talents with the ability of providing excellent creativity and integrating the procedures rare and competitive.
Most designers of this contest have good, new, and unique ideas. What I want to tell them is that don’t worry about your producing ability, and if you can use 3D, make flash and produce cartoon. You can throw yourself into this industry as long as you have unique idea and understanding about international advanced visual art, being sensitive to the surroundings, event and trend. The unimaginable developed techniques and producing procedures of this industry can be your backup. This industry has never prepared complete procedures for the coming creativity like these times.
It is not an easy way. Perhaps it will not be easier than to be a good producer. It is the competition of creativity and wisdom in which few people can insist on it to become successful.
But I believe this is our future.
Q: It is known that this contest has invited the authoritative international artists to form the judge group. And we wonder if internationalization will be the main goal for Shanda’s development in the future.
A: That is a good question and perceptive observation. Actually, internationalization is always our important strategic goal. So this year we will keep on accelerating the speed of overseas expansion. Currently, the products of Shanda Games have been exported to 48 countries and areas. Except Africa and South America, the distribution has been basically worldwide. In addition, we have established two overseas operating centers in America and Singapore so that we can directly enter the foreign online video game market to provide operating service and participate in international competitions. We believe that excellence and internationalization will be the trend for China’s online video games development. For any online video game enterprise with the hope of strengthening and enlarging, the goal of internationalization and globalization should become the necessary choice.
It is not an easy way. Perhaps it will not be easier than to be a good producer. It is the competition of creativity and wisdom in which few people can insist on it to become successful.
But I believe this is our future.
Q: As this contest ends at the beginning of the New Year, please give the young artists some wish words to help them make great progress on the way of artistic creation.
A: Thanks. Wish words may not be so much appropriate. I would like to share some understanding from the experiences with the friends who attend this contest. I hope it will be helpful.
1)Innovation is our soul and the value of living. Perhaps studying is easier relatively, but it cannot bring us a prosperous future.
2) The best age for artist’s creation is between 26 and 30. Because during this period, the skill is more mature gradually, but the enthusiasm is not yet fading. So please enjoy and cherish this time.
3) The accumulation of reading and thinking will become the watershed of artists’ ability. Don’t read too much works of others. But please read our world, life, feeling and people around you more. The plain and profound emotions in life are always the deepest source.
4) The technique is only a method through which we can show our imagination. You can get the treasures if dare to imagine. After finishing the initial base, don’t ignore the imagination for paying much scrupulous attention on techniques.
